Ontario Investing $3.74-million in Water Infrastructure in West Grey to Help Build More Homes

 Funding will enable up to 633 homes in the community of Durham

DURHAM – The Ontario government is investing $3,743,075 in the Municipality of West Grey for water infrastructure to help build approximately 633 new homes in town of Durham. The funding is being delivered through the province’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (HEWSF), a stream of the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP).

West Grey will use the funding to upgrade and expand Durham’s waterworks assets. This project will help unlock more housing opportunities and support economic growth in West Grey and surrounding communities.

“We know we need more housing in our communities, but before we build housing, we must first build the infrastructure to service it,” said Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers. “Today is an exciting day for West Grey. It represents a commitment from your provincial government that we believe in the potential of the Durham community.”

“The Municipality is grateful that the provincial government has recognized the need in our quest to solve local housing issues,” said Kevin Eccles, Mayor of West Grey. “This investment goes a long way to help us deliver on solutions for this, and to help the province in achieving its mandate to construct new homes across Ontario.”

The MHIP includes historic investments in housing- and community-enabling infrastructure that will help municipalities deliver the core infrastructure needed, such as roads and water systems, to lay the foundation for new homes in communities across the province.

“In the face of economic uncertainty, our government is investing in the future for the people of Ontario by doubling down on our plan to build,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “With our additional investments in the MHIP, we’re unlocking more housing and building critical infrastructure that will protect communities, keep workers on the job and lay the groundwork for a stronger economy.”

This round of funding brings the total number of homes enabled in Ontario through the MHIP to about 800,000. Investing in local infrastructure is part of the province’s more than $200 billion capital plan to build and improve transit, highways, hospitals, schools and other critical public infrastructure, while strengthening the economy for the future.
